AUSTIN: Knorr, the global food brand known for bringing flavor to tables around the world, launches Plizza: a more earth-friendly plant-based pizza.
The global food brand has reinvented the classic dish to be plant-based with ingredients that are better for people and the planet, from the crust to the toppings.
Around five billion pizzas are sold around the world each year, so by changing pizza to be more earth-friendly, together we can make a significant positive impact by switching to ingredients that are better for the planet.
The Plizza will be available for free on World Eat Well Day in six cities around the world; made to order and delivered hot via the local food delivery app.
Participating cities in the United States, Mexico, Indonesia, South Africa, Thailand, and China will offer a limited number of Plizzas to be ordered and delivered on February 19.
Knorr developed the Plizza to show how easy it is to make delicious changes to everyday meals that can reduce food’s negative impact on the planet while increasing its positive impact on health.
Today, our food system is a key driver of climate change, species loss, water scarcity, and soil loss and damage. Only 12 plant and 5 animal species make up 75% of the global food supply, making the food system fragile from the potential impacts of disease, pests and climate change.
The good news is that “food is the most powerful lever for maximizing human and planetary health on Earth”. Eating a wider variety of plant-based foods helps protect the future of food while providing more nutrients and reducing the use of the planet’s resources.
The launch of the Plizza is part of Knorr’s commitment to provide food that is good for people and the planet in 7 billion dishes by 2025 globally.
Created by renowned Knorr chefs, the first-ever Plizza is plant-based and made from some of the 50 foods of the future that are better for people and the planet.
The recipe itself becomes a Plizza through three simple swaps, including making the crust with whole spelled flour, adding a Knorr flavor sauce made with sustainably sourced ingredients along with high-fiber beans that enrich the soil, and Substitute highly nutritious vegetables such as fast-growing spinach and home-grown watercress.
What makes the Plizza friendlier to the planet?
It is of plant origin. More than 30% of greenhouse gas emissions (the main contributor to climate change) come from food agriculture, of which more than 60% comes from animals. Reducing the amount of animal foods we eat minimizes the impact of food on climate change.
It has a wide variety of ingredients. 75% of the global food supply is made up of just 12 plant species and five animal species5. This is causing a loss of species, making the food system fragile in the face of pests and climate change. The Plizza includes a variety of 50 Future Foods 1 from Knorr and WWF to help build a more resilient food system that can feed our growing population.
Knorr products contain ingredients that are grown with care. It is important to Knorr that our ingredients are carefully grown for the benefit of people and the planet. 95% of Knorr’s vegetables and herbs are grown sustainably globally and 80% of key ingredients (vegetables, herbs, spices, grains) will be grown in accordance with Unilever’s Regenerative Agriculture Principles by 2026. With experts predicting that there are less than 30 years of water left and that 90% of the soil (where our food is grown) will be degraded by 20507, there is an urgent need to grow food in ways that sustain and regenerate nature.
April Redmond, Global Vice President of Brand at Knorr, says: “Food is a delicious force for good and we’re on a mission to bring food that’s better for us and the planet onto everyone’s plates. With the authentic taste of Knorr Combined with the 50 Foods of the Future, we show the world how irresistible eating for good can be. Together we will change the world by changing what’s on our plates.”
Dorothy Shaver, Global Head of Food Sustainability at Unilever: “On World Eat Well Day, we want to help everyone understand the impact our food system has on the planet and our health, and offer a delicious way to effect change positive. Knorr is on a mission to help everyone consume a greater variety of plants that are grown sustainably and regeneratively for the benefit of our health and that of the planet. Through this campaign, in addition to our products, programs and partnerships, we’re inspiring everyone to eat well.”
